Professor David McGillivray, Co-Director of CCSE, has delivered a keynote address at an international conference in Cape Town on the need for major sport events to take a more responsible approach to human rights and social justice. Professor McGillivray spoke at the World Association for Sport Management conference, where he set out the case for stronger accountability, better governance and a clearer focus on the impact major events can have on workers, communities and host cities.
His keynote examined the growing expectation on sport governing bodies, organisers and host nations to ensure that major and mega sport events are planned and delivered in ways that protect rights and reduce harm, rather than simply relying on policy commitments on paper. The address also highlighted the wider potential of sport to act as a force for inclusion and positive social change when human rights, equity, diversity and participation are built into decision-making from the outset.
Professor McGillivray’s contribution drew on his research into sport events, social justice and public policy, including work looking into the relationship between major events, governance and the experiences of those most affected by hosting.
His invitation to participate in the conference reflects the University’s continued contribution to international debate on sport, society and policy, and highlights the work of UWS researchers engaging with global challenges through socially engaged research. The keynote also provided an opportunity to showcase the work of the Centre for Culture, Sport and Events and its commitment to research that informs policy, practice and public debate.
