CCSE members have significant expertise in the politics of sport and sport events and how they contribute to the achievement of progressive social justice outcomes. Our work includes theoretical, policy and practice considerations and seeks to inform and influence stakeholders from within and outside academia. CCSE members have conducted original research, commissioned evaluation and impact work relating to various sport events (London 2012, Glasgow 2014, 2018 European Sport Championships, 2015 Toronto Parapan Games, Rio Olympics 2016, the 2023 UCI Cycling World Championships) with a focus on disability sport and human rights in recent years. In the field of sport, CCSE members are investigating disability, menstruation, gender-based violence, dementia, sustainability and related social issues. Presently, members are working with colleagues in Canada, USA, Australia, Germany, Spain, Switzerland and Poland. One of our members acted as an expert advisor to the OECD draft recommendation on Global Events and Local Development. Our most recent funded projects in this thematic area include: major UK-Canada research on Leveraging Parasport Events for Sustainable Community Participation (Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council for Canada); EventRights, exploring the impact of major sporting events on human rights (European Commission) and FestivalsConnect, exploring the relationship between sport events in promoting positive equality, diversity and inclusion outcomes.
